Well, I couldn't claim to understand what you're seeing, but things seem
to be working fine here. I compiled an mpich/p4 version with gcc+ifort,
and the tests seem to work, as does the little fpi.f test. Maybe you can
email me your test code and I can see whether that works okay?

I don't know, but I compiled mpich with gcc many times and never had a 
problem. Only mixing gcc and Portland compilers sometimes causes issues.
