AGU Meeting Session SH030: Turbulence, Waves, and Reconnection

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the session SH030 on Turbulence, Waves, and Reconnection that we are organizing at the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California, 9 – 13 December 2019, and remind you that the abstract submission deadline is July 31, 2019.

The abstract submission website is: https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm19/prelim.cgi/Session/74889

We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco!

On behalf of the session conveners,

Stanislav Boldyrev

Session Title:

SH030. Turbulence, Waves, and Magnetic Reconnection from Magnetohydrodynamic to Kinetic Scales

Session Description:

Space plasma fluctuations cover a very broad range of scales, from global heliospheric scales down to the ion and electron gyroradii. Current measurements, including the MMS and PSP missions, bring attention to the important role that waves and turbulence play in plasma dynamics and thermodynamics, including solar wind heating, particle acceleration, and heat conduction. It is also becoming clear that magnetic reconnection is a characteristic feature of plasma dynamics at all scales where turbulence is present. Recent studies strongly suggest that these phenomena are interrelated: turbulence induces events of spontaneous reconnection, which, in turn, modify turbulent energy cascades and energy dissipation at the corresponding scales. This session will elucidate the interplay among space plasma turbulence, waves, and magnetic reconnection. It welcomes contributions from observational, analytical and numerical studies of plasma in various environments, from the solar corona to the solar wind to the earth magnetosheath and magnetosphere.

Session conveners:

Stanislav Boldyrev, Benjamin Chandran, Christopher Chen, Nuno Loureiro
