Postdoctoral Fellow – Plasma Physics (PHYSIC 16-01)

The West Virginia University Research Corporation (WVURC) invites applications for postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at West Virginia University (WVU). The purpose of this position is to carry out cutting edge research on the topic of magnetic reconnection and its manifestations in solar, magnetospheric and/or planetary sciences. One goal is to determine how reconnection proceeds in systems where there is a pressure gradient across a magnetic reconnection site that has an out-of-plane (guide) magnetic field and an upstream flow. This is important for magnetospheric and planetary applications. Another goal is to contribute to the understanding of the nature of ribbons in solar flares.

A PhD in Physics or a related field and experience in high performance computing, especially particle-in-cell simulations are required.

Competitive salary and benefits package offered. For a complete job description and to apply for this position, please visit http://hr.research.wvu.edu <http://hr.research.wvu.edu/> and click on the “View Jobs” link. Qualified applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references as part of the application process. Applications will be considered starting September 9, 2016, and will be considered until the position is filled. The start date can be immediate or at a negotiated time in the near future. For questions or additional information, contact Dr. Paul Cassak, 304-293-5102, email: Paul.Cassak at mail.wvu.edu <mailto:Paul.Cassak at mail.wvu.edu>.

WVU is a comprehensive land grant university with 29,000 students. WVU is classified by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education as a Research-High Activity Institution. The Department of Physics and Astronomy (http://physics.wvu.edu <http://physics.wvu.edu/>) consists of 22 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 15 research faculty and postdoctoral researchers, 72 Ph.D. graduate students, and approximately 80 undergraduate physics majors. The largest research areas are condensed matter physics, astrophysics, plasma physics, and physics education.

The University community of Morgantown offers plentiful educational opportunities as well as recreational outlets, is within easy driving distance of Pittsburgh, PA, and is about 200 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. WVURC is an AA/EOE/Minorities/Females/Vet/Disability/E-verify compliant employer.
