SHINE Newsletter, November 20, 2013

Dear All,

Thanks to the hard work of Umbe Cantu and Noe Lugaz, the time and
location of the 2014 SHINE Workshop have been finalized. The Workshop
will be held in Telluride, Colorado, from June 23 to June 27 (further
details below). I hope to see you there.

If there is an exciting problem or topic that you would like to see
discussed at the meeting, please consider proposing a session
(instructions given under item 2 below). Leading a session can be a
lot of fun, and the Workshop needs good session proposals in order to
be a success.

Best regards,

Ben Chandran

2. Call for session proposals for the 2014 Workshop. (Deadline: Jan. 15)

If there is an exciting problem, topic, or debate in your field,
please consider proposing a session at the next SHINE Workshop to
address that subject. SHINE sessions typically have two session
organizers, and these organizers work with a member of the SHINE
Steering Committee to plan the session. If you want to propose a
session but do not have a partner to organize the session with you,
you can still propose the session. In that case, we will work with you
to find a co-organizer.

All session proposers should take a look at the updated guidelines for
proposing and leading sessions, which are posted on the SHINE Website
at

http://shinecon.org/pages/Documents/Session_guidelines_2013.pdf

The deadline for submitting session proposals is January 15. Session
proposals (roughly one-page in length) should be emailed to me at
benjamin.chandran at unh.edu.

3. SPA Advocacy Request

From: Harlan Spence (Harlan.Spence at unh.edu)

(Dated August, 2013.)

Dear Colleague:

As recently announced - see
http://solarnews.nso.edu/current.html#section3 - the Space Physics &
Aeronomy (SPA) Section of the American Geophysical Union has formed an
SPA Advocacy Committee, tasked with advocating the scientific and
other benefits of heliophysics research to key stakeholders. A fairly
obvious strategy involves strengthening connections with House and
Senate members of the respective CJS (Commerce, Justice, and Science)
Appropriations Committees (and their staff). The members of these
Appropriations Committee come from various states (see lists at
http://appropriations.house.gov/about/members/commercejusticescience.htm
and http://www.appropriations.senate.gov/sc-commerce.cfm ), and each
should be particularly receptive to advocacy from individuals that
have a connection to his/her home state.

Now, it is rather straightforward for the SPA Advocacy Committee to
identify individuals that WORK in particular states, but it is less
straightforward to identify individuals who have other connections to
these states (for example, individuals who have graduated from
universities in those states). Therefore, I have a simple request -
if, after reviewing the appropriations committee membership, you
believe that you have a meaningful connection with one of the states
represented on its membership, please sent me a short e-mail at:

SPA-Advocacy at guero.sr.unh.edu

indicating the nature of the connection. For graduates, indicate the
university(ies) from which you hold degrees and the years in which
these degrees were earned.

Similar emails are going out simultaneously to the CEDAR and SolarNews
communities, as well, so if you receive multiple requests, you need
only respond to one request as the Advocacy committee will be
coordinating responses.

Thanks in advance,
- Harlan Spence
