March LTER Community Call

Synthesis Skills for Early Career Researchers

March 27, 2023

Our March LTER Community Call presents our new Synthesis Skills for Early Career Researchers course, which is currently in development at the LTER Network Office.

Join the March Community Call to learn about the course plan and opportunities to take part as a project science mentor or a participant.

Community Calls take place every fourth Wednesday of the month, with a new topic each month.

For registration, information on how to suggest topics, and more, see the LTER Community Calls webpage.

Build Your Mentoring Skills

The Entering Mentoring program is an evidence-based mentoring approach specifically tailored to STEMM researchers. The LTER Network is piloting a free in-network offering of this workshop series. Learn more and apply to join the two-session series (April 18 and May 2).

FieldFutures Bystander Intervention training

In 2024, the LTER Network Office will offer two FieldFutures workshops designed to prevent harassment and assault in fieldwork.

These workshops are designed for LTER researchers who expect to be in leadership roles in the coming field season. This includes, but is not limited to, investigators, graduate students, postdocs, and staff.

  • Tuesday April 23 at 10:30-Noon PT (1:30-3:00 p.m. ET)

DEIA Resource of the Month

Equipment Repositories for Accessibility: A Model for Improving Access in Field Science

MSP LTER graduate student Charlotte Devitz has spent a lot of time thinking about how field stations can be more accessible to people with disabilities. One idea is to create equipment repositories. These repositories lend equipment, such as offroad wheelchairs, to individuals that might need them to get around field sites; the program enables a broad range of people to participate in field work while mitigating financial costs to the individual. You can read her full paper here >>

For a more general overview, read an interview with Charlotte in the Integrative and Comparative Biology blog, which covers a lot of information around making fieldwork inclusive for those with disabilities.

DEIA Resource of the month is brought to you by the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. Contact Committee chairs Nameer Baker (nameerbaker@gmail.com) or Mariah Patton (mtpatton@unm.edu) for additional information.

Community Forum Posts of the Month

A new section following the launch of our Community Forum, containing select posts that you may have missed each month. We’re toying with the best way to bring this information to our network, but for now, the section lives here. As always, let us know what you think!

Our newsletter only goes out once a month. That doesn’t always let us promote events or jobs at the most effective time. The Community Forum this month was varied set of posts from all corners of the network—be sure to sign up to stay informed!

We’re still on social media, of course. Check us out at the links below, and remember that we also have a Mastodon and BlueSky page.
