Dear Colleagues,

We need to appoint a new external advisor for Hubbard Brook (start date: April 2019 COS meeting). Ivan Fernandez will have served wonderfully in this role for six years and we need to replace him. The SCC has been collecting nominations over the last few months from COS members (see below). We plan to narrow the list down to three candidates for discussion at our Jan 2019 COS meeting.

If you haven't already, please send us your nominations. In our discussion of what makes a good advisor, we noted the value of appointing a colleague who is able to participate regularly in the "life" of HBES. Therefore, we seek nominations of people who are close enough in geographic distance to participate regularly in our COS meetings. We have learned over time that regular engagement by our external evaluator leads to a much deeper understanding of the challenges and successes at Hubbard Brook and thus more nuanced advice regarding the future. Please send us your nominations by November  9, 2018.

Thank you

Role of External Advisor

The External Advisor serves a 3-year term, and becomes a member of the Hubbard Brook community and the SCC, which is the steering committee for the project. The external advisor provides a viewpoint on our current science, our plans for future work, and other aspects of the functioning of the HBES. The Hubbard Brook scientists meet quarterly, usually either at Hubbard Brook or at the Cary Institute in Millbrook. We hope the external advisor would attend as many of these meetings as possible, but at least 1-2 per year. All meetings include scientific “visioning” sessions, in which we review current science and make plans for future projects, as well as a short business session.
