We would like to continue the discussion about re-envisioning an REU program that Geoff initiated at the last Quarterly Project Meeting. We hope that many of you will participate in this brainstorming session (not just those who might mentor). The discussion will include topics about the structure of the program, inclusive recruiting ideas, community building ideas, ways to increase contact with mentors, ways to ensure mentors adequately supervise their students, ways to support both students and mentors. It would also include further discussion of remote participation with a brief on-site visit and a mixed model with some students on-site for the whole summer and some mostly remote.
We have 4 REU slots open in the current LTER for summer 2022, so this would be a good opportunity to test out some of the ideas generated in the discussion. We would like to recruit from the broadest student base possible and to open the door to students who don't already have some direct connection to Hubbard Brook via their institution, for example.
We anticipate having a follow-up meeting with potential mentors.
Please let us know your availability to meet by completing the Doodle Poll here at your earliest convenience. We are hoping to move this forward as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Geoff and Peter
