Outreach and Education Update 

• Anthea Lavallee gave a general presentation about Hubbard Brook to the House Committee on Agriculture and Forestry at the Vermont Statehouse on May 9. Later in the month, she presented at the Northern Woodlands annual board meeting in support of their collaboration with Hubbard Brook.
  
  
• Amey Bailey joined other scientists and environmental educators to participate in the 26th Annual New Hampshire Drinking Water Festival & 4th Grade Water Science Fair on May 9. Approximately 350 third and fourth graders from the Manchester, Keane, and Plymouth areas attended the event, where Amey led a hands-on activity to teach students about soil layers and pH.
  
  
• Sarah Garlick led a Hubbard Brook Roundtable at Pierce Lab on May 10 to kick off a new HBRF Advisory Council and to inform a new Science Links project about ecological and community resilience, supported by the NSF Public Engagement with Science grant. The roundtable involved 23 stakeholders and scientist participants including Clara Chaisson, Tim Fahey, Iam Halm, Anthea Lavallee, Peter Groffman, Peter Martin, and Pam Templer. • The Northeast Climate Science Center’s 2018 cohort of fellows spent part of their May 14-May 17 retreat at Hubbard Brook. John Campbell took the fellows on a tour of research sites in the forest, and Anthea Lavallee led a discussion about outreach and scientist-stakeholder relationships. 
  
  
• Manomet’s Climate Smart Land Network held its member gathering at Pierce Lab on May 23 and 24. Several Hubbard Brook scientists participated in the event. Lindsey Rustad spoke to the group about the Ice Storm Experiment; Pam Templer and Matt Vadeboncoeur presented on the Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment and DroughtNet and led a field trip to the study plots. 
  
  
• Scott and Amey Bailey gave a tour of Hubbard Brook to a joint group representing the Pemigewasset River Local Advisory Committee and the Conservation Commissions of Thornton and Campton on May 27. 
  
  
• On June 4, collaborators from HBRF, Dartmouth College, and the Tuck School of Business will hold a roundtable discussion of the emerging climate and clean water economy in the Northern Forest.

• The Hubbard Brook Research Foundation will host its next informal lunch discussion at the Pierce Lab on Tuesday, June 19 at noon. We’ll be reading and discussing Historical Roots of Hydrology and Biogeochemistry by Kevin McGuire and Gene Likens. • As part of the Embedding Public Engagement with Science at LTER Sites project, the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation recently launched a new science communication tool called Forest Science News. This monthly e-newsletter features science news relevant to the forests of the northeastern US and eastern Canada. Share this link with colleagues and friends to invite them to subscribe. • The USDA Forest Service has an opening for a hydrologist to work at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Applications will be accepted until Tuesday, June 5. Click here for more information about the position.

• The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies seeks a temporary project assistant this summer to determine the most efficient way to house a sample collection for ecological studies at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. The project assistant will work with USDA Forest Service scientist Linda Pardo.
