Dear Colleagues,

Hubbard Brook is a special place to work where the community of researchers is as much an asset as the scientific insights we learn. Toward that end, we want to ensure that Hubbard Brook maintains a vibrant, inclusive work environment that is safe and free of harassment and other forms of discrimination. The Scientific Coordinating Committee has been working to articulate a policy regarding workplace safety and inclusion that adheres to the standards set by NSF and our constituent institutions.

We have attached our draft policies for your review and comment. Our goal is to have this policy approved and in effect by the 2018 field season. We have a draft statement to all personnel managers/academic advisors that outlines lines of responsibility. We also have a draft statement to share with all participants at the start of every field season.

One aspect of our proposed policy is to maintain a current list of personnel managers and their supervisors as well as the workplace safety policies of the home institutions. It is important for any student or employee who has a concern to know who is in charge and how to report or discuss an issue. We ask that all potential supervisors, employers, or academic advisors enter the relevant information. The SCC has made a start in order to provide a template but we need your help.

Here is the link to the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1V2ZaLhXULpSRsM_w4Vr8_Iu9wNr5eR7HS0orFzCUgEE/edit?usp=sharing

Please take a moment to review our draft policy and complete the contact list of personnel managers. We have set aside time at the July COS to discuss the workplace safety policy and review its 2018 roll-out.

Thank you,

Pam and John
