Hello Hubbard Brook Friends!
It’s time for my yearly offer to make you a web app!
Each spring, our Environmental Data Science seniors at Virginia Tech work with Hubbard Brook scientists to create web applications for their capstone experience.
What can we build you?
-Data visualization
-Data validation / QA-QC
-Field data input or planning
-Outreach aids
-More! (have an idea for something a little different? Let’s hear it!)
The primarily goal is for the students to work with a research team/researcher client to build a tool or perform an analysis that is useful for that team.
If you think you may be interested, please e-mail me with your idea! We are looking for 3-4 projects this year.
For those considering, please see more information below.
This is meant to be a very low time commitment for you. Usually, I will meet with you to prepare for introducing the project to the students, and then you would meet with the students three times throughout the semester. First to introduce the project, second to review progress halfway through the semester, and then at the end of the semester for final review. I act as a go-between for you and the students: before we send emails asking questions, I see if I can help the students, they aren’t provided with your email address to avoid them asking too much.
Here are some example apps:
Education app about basic hydrology data visualization: https://vt-eds.shinyapps.io/S23-WaterViz/
Data viz for cave drip data: https://vt-eds.shinyapps.io/S23-EDS-CaveDrips/
Data viz and for forest ecology data
Data viz for stream temp https://vt-eds.shinyapps.io/S24-EDS-StreamTemp/
(We’ve also made apps to help researchers QA data and plan for field outings)
