Colleagues,

I want to thank everyone who participated in last week’s meeting on Proposing Research on Phosphorus for the LTER Renewal. We had inspiring presentations by Jenny Bower, Tim Fahey, Charley Driscoll, Jeff Merriam and Mark Green, Pam Templer, Rich Phillips, Peter Groffman, and Audrey Thellman with Emma Rosi and Emily Bernhardt. Melany Fisk, Tim Fahey, John Campbell, and Mark Green were involved in the planning.

Thank you also to everyone who attended and contributed commentary in the google doc<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1h7b59RzZ7h9wHMD4Yv2ubJIPjxHLhuO0MS5i0UCbCso/edit#> and in the breakout groups. This document will be very helpful in the preparation of the LTER renewal proposal. You can continue to add to it! Comments are organized by the topics in the presentations. At the very bottom there is a place to make comments about the format of the meeting.

I was resistant to the suggestion that we should write a paper on this topic prior to the renewal, but John Campbell has offered to help outline such a paper. I will be reaching out to the presenters, let me know if you are not on that list but would like to contribute. There were a lot of people adding useful links and graphics in the google doc—if you didn’t have a chance to read it all during the meeting, take a look at your convenience.

I want to close with a comment from Rich Phillips that helped me appreciate our community.

I was reminded of the uniqueness of HB. Such an interdisciplinary and collegial group of scientists, all working in the same system. Remarkably conducive to learning. It's not something you can find anywhere and I'm quite envious.

You can stay involved, Rich! It’s an advantage of operating remotely under a global pandemic.

x Ruth

I’m sorry not to be seeing any of you in person!

There are some advantages to a zoom meeting, and I’m hoping we can try some new things.

  * We will be using this Oct 16 COS<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1h7b59RzZ7h9wHMD4Yv2ubJIPjxHLhuO0MS5i0UCbCso/edit> google doc to record ideas that come up during the meeting (or before, or after).
  * Please feel free to type anything you like in there, with or without your name associated with it—the topics we will discuss are listed below the agenda.
  * Type your name after “Breakout” under the topic you would like to discuss in small groups.

The chat function of the Zoom meeting will also be available. But entries there are in chronological order; in the google doc, they can be organized by topic. You can “Show document outline” (under the View menu) if you want to see the headings.

Discussion will be limited during the morning presentations—so please use the google doc! I will ask for volunteers to monitor the google doc and the chat in case we have time to address questions. We booked only 5 minutes per topic in the morning session.

We booked half an hour for small groups, and we booked extra time for the final discussion, rather than cut off what might be fascinating discussions fruitful for our next LTER renewal.

I pre-populated the breakout groups with names of some of our speakers, but you can move yourself if you want to. If there are no takers for some of the topics, that just means we might not pursue them. If a topic comes up that you would rather discuss than the ones we have, please add it.

Thanks in advance to the lineup of people planning to inspire us towards new research ideas.

To give credit where credit is due: Tim, Melany, and I came up with the first draft of the schedule, and Mark and John contributed earlier to the generation of ideas.

See you soon!

x Ruth

Dear Colleagues,

KEY REMINDERS: Our next COS meeting is tomorrow, Friday (October 16) from 10 AM - 2:30 PM Eastern Time.
Science Topic: Phosphorus. Format: Zoom. Agenda: Attached.

PLEASE READ DETAILS BELOW. We apologize for the long message.

Our next COS meeting is next Friday (October 16) from 10 AM - 2:30 PM Eastern Time. Ruth Yanai and Melany Fisk have organized the science program on the theme "Proposing Research on Phosphorus for the LTER Renewal." Clara Chaisson will lead a session designed to advance our goals regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Hubbard Brook community. Finally we will meet the new Forest Supervisor of the White Mountain National Forest, Derek Ibarguen. He will introduce himself to the COS.
Given the packed agenda, we will provide written updates on COS business items.
The final agenda is attached.
The format is an online Zoom meeting. We have sent calendar invites to the entire Hubbard Brook community. The link is below. Please DO NOT share the Zoom link.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In an effort to improve security, Zoom now requires all users to login to join the meeting. So the convenient one click entry is not available.
If you have a Zoom account, just join via your calendar invite link or from your Zoom interface.
If you do not have a Zoom account, you can login using your Google ID. You can also sign-up for a free Zoom account.
The Zoom meeting will be open at 9:30 AM. Please allow time to troubleshoot your entry. The Zoom host (Battles) can help (jbattles at berkeley.edu<mailto:jbattles at berkeley.edu>). Federal employees in particular seem to have trouble navigating the login given concerns about security.
Presenters, please also login early to practice sharing your screen. To ensure a smooth meeting, please upload your presentation to the shared drive (upload presentation<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1sMyO5HRr9Posfw8gASlJ9YAb4UevGR7n?usp=sharing>). In case you have internet connection problems, we can host your slides and you can present via telephone.

Looking forward to seeing you all next week.

John and Christy (SCC co-chairs)
