Hello—

Another, another update with data from days 67-248 of this year. Same three plots as described in my email with the last update six months ago (below). Note the substantial step down in flux and therefore dose in the latest six-month period; I had thought that I had understood from Dick Mewaldt’s work that we launched into the absolute peak of the last solar minimum’s GCR fluxes in 2009, but the fact that they immediately began dropping off makes me wonder if we missed the turnaround at the top by some fraction of a year. I have finished recalibrating the SAMPEX/PET proton dataset; PET has proton and alpha data that overlapped LRO by a couple of weeks (through day 273 of 2009 – whew!), so I guess this will give me a shove to finish calibrating CRaTER’s clean triples protons (one very narrow energy channel) and alphas (a much broader range of energies) so I can assemble a time series from 1992 to the present, with at least those couple of weeks of overlap to check intercalibration. I’m still grinding on the reprocessing of the albedo simulation results before assembling the GLACE model (I thought the reprocessing would be done by now), so maybe I can slip this intercalibration into my to-do list.

Again, I hope we can use this to illustrate CRaTER’s utility to Artemis—

Subject: Another six months' CRaTER data in LET spectra and dose rate
Hello—

I attach three graphs, which extend the time series from the 2020 Space Weather paper (DOI 10.1029/2020SW002543) with another six months of data (thanks, as always, to Jody for making this available in near real time). There are two plots of LET spectra, both multiplied by the square of the abscissa to reduce the many-decade dynamic range; one magnifies the H/He region where statistics are best, so that differences can more readily be seen. There is also a plot of the 4-pi dose rate, calculated per the appendix of the paper for the spectrum measured in each six-month period. As discussed in that paper, intensity during the recent solar minimum rose a few percent above the already record-setting intensity at the start of the mission; as of the most recent period, it has finally fallen back (slightly) below the level at the start of the mission.

Hope this helps in pointing out CRaTER’s utility to Artemis et al.—
