I personally am not a fan of talks with little scientific content—or ‘this is what I am planning to do’ talks.
I wouldn’t advocate holding a place in advance for each REU—without having any idea of the student’s project or ability/desire to present. (And not all students
are REUs)
I am not sure why it takes 4 weeks to schedule 80 talks.

I think it would be difficult to get the program together with such a late deadline. How about allocating a special session to REU students, and setting aside
time in the program for 1-minute or 2-minute talks. We could put the names of the students in the program, since at least the names should be known ahead of time. The students could present their titles and plans at the meeting.

Dear Colleagues:
While I appreciate the desire to make the schedule of talks available earlier than the last minute, I am concerned that the June 2 deadline is SO early that it
makes it impossible for students to present their current research—many of them will be just arriving around that time.
Would it not be possible to have a deadline in mid-June and still give Scott enough time to make the schedule and get it out to us at least 2 weeks before the
meeting? This year, 2 weeks before the meeting is 28 June.
I understand that some people are no longer willing/able to attend the whole 1.5 days of the meeting and would like to plan their schedules further in advance—but
I think this is a fairly small group and that our priority, as a place focused on education, should be on allowing students to have the experience of presenting their work at a meeting.
